Film4Ever! – Graffiti’€™s High School Diploma

Nathaniel Nickels Photography - www.natenickels.smugmug.comAmongst the reminders of bridges from days long ago sits this wall being recycled as public art.

It seems that many kids from Sidney High School come out to decorate the wall when they finally do graduate. At least in some way kids in school are being exposed to art still, and that can only be a good thing. A creative mind is an active mind.

Film4Ever! – Growing Native Plants

Los Angeles, California U.S.A. - 2010Nathaniel Nickels Photography http://www.natenickels.smugmug.comFacebook - http://www.facebook.com/5centphotos/Journal - http://natenickels.wordpress.com/It is nice to see some actual native plants around Los Angeles used for landscaping.

Remember just because a plant looks pretty does not mean it’s the right choice. If a plant is not native it could have adverse effects to the plant and animal life in your area, not to mention using more water. Check the link below to see what you should be planting for your landscaping needs.

Here is a list of native plants to California – http://www.cnps.org/cnps/grownative/lists.php

And why you should use native plants – http://www.cnps.org/cnps/grownative/why_native.php

Film4Ever! – What Flower Is This?

Nathaniel Nickels Photography - www.natenickels.smugmug.comI can still smell this flower; it had a sweet quality about it as the warm morning light began to be absorbed by all of the living things. Do you know what flower this is?

A friend suggested that I show off this picture, I had my doubts and was originally not going to include in on my site. It’s hard to pick and choose from your own work I know that :-) What do you think?

Film4Ever! – Los Angeles Concert Hall

Los Angeles, California U.S.A. - 2010Nathaniel Nickels Photography http://www.natenickels.smugmug.comFacebook - http://www.facebook.com/5centphotos/Journal - http://natenickels.wordpress.com/One of the most iconic and unique architecture designs in LA, the concert hall is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The building was finished in 1996 and designed by Frank Gehry.

I would love to see a show there sometime, here is hoping!

Film4Ever! – When Giants Fall

Los Angeles, California U.S.A. - 2010Nathaniel Nickels Photography http://www.natenickels.smugmug.comFacebook - http://www.facebook.com/5centphotos/Journal - http://natenickels.wordpress.com/Its amazing walking around skyscrapers, they seem to go on forever. This presents a big photographic challenge as well as hard to get the whole building in frame. Starting from outside working in me found a nice hole though some trees to spot two of the tallest buildings in downtown Los Angeles.

If I got into what I thought about these two particular banks and my dealings with them it could get ugly. But feel free to share your love or lack of love for the banking industry below.

Film4Ever! – Ghost of Trains Past

Nathaniel Nickels Photography - www.natenickels.smugmug.comI was walking around in the morning through the very large sports complex in Sidney and came across this just off the beaten path. It looks to be the remains of an old train bridge. You can also spot a 2nd support behind the trees on the right side of the picture.

Even though the imprint looks rather small over time the man-made support beam will influence the path of the stream in which it sits. It too will be eroded by the flowing water over time. I wonder why they choose to place the supports in the stream and not on the banks.

One could debate on the removal of the train supports that are no longer used. But my gut reaction would be the city workers would simply leave the rubble along the shores thus influencing the eventual flow of the river even more. Time will only tell how this small man-made addition will change the flow of this water passage.

Film4Ever! – Tawawa Lake in Sidney, Ohio

Nathaniel Nickels Photography - www.natenickels.smugmug.comI took this nice shot early in the morning and was happy how it turned out. Like my other landscape shots I try to frame the main part of the scene with trees on the sides almost as bookends.

After looking at this photograph I began to wonder is Lake Tawawa in Sidney, Ohio really a lake? If you compare it based on size to The Great Lakes its laughable to call it a lake. Civic planners however don’t want to market they have a large pond when their neighboring cities are claiming to have a lake. Just some food for thought.

Film4Ever! – Discovering Life In Los Angeles

Los Angeles, California U.S.A. - 2010Nathaniel Nickels Photography http://www.natenickels.smugmug.comFacebook - http://www.facebook.com/5centphotos/Journal - http://natenickels.wordpress.com/” The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.” – Frank Herbert

I am starting my 5th year in Los Angeles, it’s been tough, it’s been challenging. But over all that I have learned more about how the world runs and what I want to get out of it. This one is taken in downtown looking south.

Film4Ever! – Natural Patterns

Los Angeles, California U.S.A. - 2010Nathaniel Nickels Photography http://www.natenickels.smugmug.comFacebook - http://www.facebook.com/5centphotos/Journal - http://natenickels.wordpress.com/For some reason Humans love patterns, we love things to equal and in perfect symmetry. Often things in nature are not this way but we are only viewing things from our point of view. If they are not in balance we become out of balance. Throughout our history as a species we have tried to make things become a perfect reflection of the other side, if only our politicians acted this way things might be easier for everybody.

The simplistic nature of this building really caught my eye. Looking up hundreds of feet in the air I saw this interesting pattern form. I decided to add a green cast over the image to bring to point my idea that patterns are all-around us inspired by nature.

So the next time you look up at a building that is reaching for the stars take a moment to think about how it’s design relates to our own body design and that of other patterns in nature. Also, look at this photo, what is something in nature that has the same pattern?
